About half our grinding calls are stumps we didn't make: the tree came down years ago, or a storm took it, or the last contractor's "removal" price quietly stopped at ankle height. The machine doesn't care. If a self-propelled grinder can reach it - and through a 36-inch gate, it usually can - the stump can be ground.
Pricing is the most honest in the trade: it scales with stump diameter and count, measured at the widest point including the root flare. That's why our estimates list it by the stump. How deep do you grind a stump?
Standard is 4 to 8 inches below grade - enough to backfill, seed, and mow over like the tree was never there. Planting a new tree in the same spot or pouring concrete needs a deeper grind, which is worth saying up front so it lands on the estimate.
Stump grinding vs. stump removal - which do I need?
Grinding chews the visible stump into chips below lawn level and leaves the roots to decay naturally - fast, affordable, and right for almost every yard situation. Full removal pulls the root plate out of the ground, which tears up a large area and usually only makes sense for construction. Our guide walks the decision, but the short version: grind, unless an excavator is already coming.
What happens to the roots after grinding?
They decay in place over several years. A few species - silver maple among them - can send up sprouts from live roots for a season or two; mowing them off exhausts the root reserve. The chips left from grinding settle as they compost, so we overfill the hole slightly or haul chips and backfill with soil if you prefer.
Why not just leave the stump?
Left alone, a stump takes a decade or more to rot, and it spends that decade sprouting, sinking into a mower-eating hollow, and hosting carpenter ants and fungus close to your house. It also keeps the spot unusable. Grinding closes the story the day the tree comes down - which is why most removals here include it.
